All’s Well
written, directed and produced by paulina casey
I wrote the script for ALL’S WELL about six years ago and decided to make the movie in 2019. The film centers women and queer people –– both in front of and behind the camera. We shot it in the blistering cold of February in 2020, just weeks before the COVID-19 pandemic caved in on New York City.
ALL’S WELL is about a young woman on the verge. But it’s more than that. It’s about the millennial condition, set against the backdrop of a modern-day American society, one that is amok with violence, global warming, dirty politics, and corporate greed. Throughout the film, we see the underbelly of city life; one that suffocates and slams into you. And you slam right back into it.
Through our protagonist, we ask: What does it feel like when you not only live in this world, but are consumed by it? Where do you go to escape the madness? How do we come to terms with the steady, lingering undercurrent of malaise?
We do the little things. We connect to each other. And to ourselves. We screw up, and then we try to do better. We continue to pummel forward, because it’s the only way. We try to envision a future that might not be so bad. The optimism required to wake up and go again. It’s about the mess and its inherent beauty.
